SHAS (Sale Horticultural and Allotment Society) has managed the Grosvenor Road allotments since 1988. The allotments existed prior to this, dating back to the late 1800s, and were initially managed by Trafford Borough Council.
During the 1980s, the allotments became neglected, with many plots vacant and unkempt. Concerned plot holders formed a group, tidied the site, and cleared vacant plots for re-letting. Their initiative impressed the Council, leading to the offer of self-management and the Sale Horticultural and Allotment Society, SHAS, was born.
