Message from Matt:
“We’ve only had our allotment for a year, but it has already become a very special place for us to spend time as a family, and always allows us to escape the increasingly fast-paced world that’s outside the gates. Our first growing season has undoubtedly been a steep learning curve, but the feeling we got when we dug up real potatoes that we’d grown ourselves will stay with us for a very long time.
Building a pond on our plot was a top priority as I’m really committed to increasing biodiversity, and I think allotments are a perfect place to try and promote a better balance between people and nature. As a family we’re fortunate to own a patch of plantation woodland in Wales and in 2023 started a restoration project with the Woodland Trust to gradually restore it back to mixed native woodland. I’m hopeful I can use some of the skills I’ve learnt doing this to help promote more biodiversity at the allotment.
To finish up, I’d just like to say I’m very grateful to have been co-opted on to the Committee by the existing members and I look forward to helping ensure the allotment continues to be such an amazing place for so many people.”
